My name is Mary Louise Hütter.
You might know me as:
- Mary Louise if we've been in a "professional setting".
- Mary if we're casual.
- Buffy if you knew me as a child.
- Grrlskout if you knew me online.
- Bl00dy Mary if we were MySpace friends.
- "That Maddy Girl" if you watched Return to Twin Peaks on the Gold Box dvd set.
I named my company Stitches, because I am super clumsy and have gotten stitches soooooo many times!
tl;dr
I've been hunting for vintage since I was 13.
I'm neurodivergent and nerdy.
Professionally I've been a video editor, but have had so many hobbies and sidequests that I'm now trying to combine them all into my dream of Stitches Oddities!
More than you wanted to know
I was born in Bay City, Michigan (just like Madonna!). I grew up in the 80s and 90s, with (I only now realize) undiagnosed ADHD and OCD. I was always “A pleasure to have in class’, was “courteous and cooperative”, but also “wasted time”, and was “capable of doing better work.” I could never seem to remember to do my homework, but instead hyper-fixated on random things: TV Shows (Twin Peaks, Dallas, Dark Shadows (90s version!)), books (mostly V.C. Andrews…), horror films (I can probably recite Elm St. 1 word for word if I had to). I got really into fashion from previous decades, starting in the 6th grade, when a friend of my mom’s gifted me her three prom dresses from the early 60s (which I stupidly got rid of when I was once trying to be a minimalist. NEVER AGAIN!)
I was SUUUUPER COOL (not), and if not spending time in my bedroom watching tv, reading, making art, writing melodramatic poetry; I was at the movie theatre watching B-movies with my besties, at the library searching for old magazine articles of our favorite celebrities (pre-internet!!!), or hanging out at my local (and epic) antique store, which had a soda foundtain called CrackerJacks! I would dress in a vintage outfit, sip on a soda fountain chocolate Coke, and read Life magazines from the 40s. (Why no, I didn’t really date, thanks for asking! haa haa)
I was convinced I wanted to be a soap opera actress or a dream therapist (yes, I watched Nightmare on Elm St. too much…), but ended up falling into the film department in college when I realized it was a viable option. At 14, I was introduced to David Lynch, and felt like he was my guardian angel. The language he was speaking, which others misunderstood and often mocked: I understood.
I’ve been a professional video editor for over 25 years, working mostly in advertising. I spent a decade working in the post-production department of the world’s largest independent advertising agency: Doner Advertising (made infamous recently on the TV show Detroiters). I owned my own freelance editing company in Michigan, where I traveled all over the country editing, and continuing when we moved across the US to Washington State, where I got to live in the real Twin Peaks for seven years!
Speaking of Twin Peaks, I went pretty far down that rabbit hole. I've been obsessed since the night the pilot premiered when I was 14. The show, the film FWWM, and the Secret Diary saved my life as a teen. I read Wrapped in Plastic magazine whenever I could get my mitts on a copy. I joined DavidLynch.com the day it opened. Made instant lifelong friends with fellow members. Chatted with them and David in the chat rooms. Met David several times, including connecting him and one of my favorite bands Black Tape for a Blue Girl. Was in the 2002 "Ladies of DavidLynch.com" calendar that was made for David's birthday. Started going to the Fest in the mid aughts. And from there... deeper and deeper into the fandom. I now help run The Real TwinPeaks events and non-profit in the Snoqualmie Valley, Washington. Oh, and I have a podcast about my childhood favorite tv show Dallas, called The Ewing Barbecue Podcast.
In 2021, my family (husband, two kids, dogs, and cat) and I decided to move back to the place where my husband and I met during college: Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Located right in the middle of the Lower Peninsula, Mount Pleasant is just the right distance from everything. We also quickly discovered that it was a GOLD MINE of vintage clothing, homewares, toys, ephemera, etc. We couldn’t stop estate sale shopping and realized we couldn’t keep everything!
Thus, Stitches Oddities was born. We find amazing things hiding in people’s basements and garages that they don’t think are even worth saving. We clean them, fix them up, and sometimes remake them into other things as upcycled works of art.
Clothing quality used to be so much better. Why pay for Fast Fashion that won’t last six months, when you could wear the very thing that piece was BASED on, that is made from quality fabrics and has already stood the test of time? It already has a story to tell and is looking to be a part of another one!
At the same time, we are building a brick-and-mortar location in Downtown Mount Pleasant. Not just to offer these pieces a home base, but to re-create something that seems to be currently missing from life in the 2020s. A place for community. A place to go, where you don’t need an appointment. A place to hang out, meet your friends, make new friends, and bond over shared interests.
We were SO CLOSE! Stitches Oddities was FOUR DAYS away from our soft opening on September 19, 2025, when a fire destroyed the building, sparked in my workshop by an exploding lithium battery! My entire workshop was incinerated including all of my tools and art supplies. A good portion of our stock was destroyed by smoke and water damage. Both of our neighbors:m The Painted Turtle and Pleasant City Coffee Shop were also hurt. Pleasant City reopened a few months later after renovation, and The Painted Turtle has moved to a new location.
After the fire I sat staring at a wall for about 4 months...
We are still devastated, but are working on starting again. Bigger this time. We’re also doubling down. You won’t find AI here. When we reopen, you will have the ability to shop for vintage, local, and handmade. You will hear live music, meet your local clubs, play board games, and old video games - including a few in our mini arcade! Rent one of our two soundproof rooms for an hour+ to karaoke with your friends! Rent a movie on VHS from our video rental store (along with a VHS player if needed!) to have your own 80s/ 90s movie night! Come and recite your poetry on Open Mic Night. It will be our teeny recycled version of the 80s/90s Mall meets Coffeeshop Experience. And this will happen in 209 W Broadway (formerly The Painted Turtle).
Eventually, once the site of the fire, 207 W Broadway, is brought back to life. (It had to be completely gutted, and we still need a new roof...) We will open our own late-night diner.
Do you want to get out of the house, but don't necessarily want to hit the bar? Then you'll be able to grab a mug and drink too much coffee while eating pastries, passively watch old TV shows and films, or join brand new friends while playing a board game. Feeling fancy? Try one of our signature mocktails, and listen to the best music you’ll ever hear in a public place.
Stitches Oddities wants to be your home away from home.
